Princess of Wales Appointed to First RAF Role in Tribute to Her Grandfather

The Princess of Wales has assumed her first Royal Air Force (RAF) role in tribute to her grandfather, Captain Peter Middleton. She has been named the new Royal Honorary Air Commodore for RAF Coningsby, marking her first senior role with the RAF. The new role is a gesture of respect to her grandfather, an RAF pilot during the Second World War who had the opportunity to fly with the late Prince Philip during his two-month tour of South America in 1962.

Military appointments within the Royal family underwent a reshuffle following the King's ascension to the throne last September. The promotion to a senior RAF position underscores the first instance that the Princess has been officially associated with an operational front-line RAF unit. She previously holds the title of Royal Honorary Air Commodore of the Air Cadets, which is not a part of regular military operations.

The Princess will likely visit the RAF unit, possibly accompany them on flights, attend significant functions and events, meet and engage with the base community, and even support charity work associated with the base. She was also appointed as Colonel-in-Chief of 1st The Queen’s Dragoon Guards and as the new Commodore-in-Chief of the Fleet Air Arm, a title that previously belonged to Prince Andrew before it was rescinded.

Other new appointments were announced in the recent reshuffle, which include the Duchess of Edinburgh being instated as Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal Irish Regiment and Queen Camilla being announced as the new Colonel-in-Chief of The Royal Lancers. Along with the reshuffling, the King has adopted eight of his late mother’s honorary titles himself; this includes the role of sponsor for the Royal Navy’s warship HMS Queen Elizabeth. As sponsor, the King will maintain a close association with the warship and its crew throughout its service.

In other changes, the Prince of Wales undertook the role of Colonel-in-Chief of the Mercian Regiment, Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps, and Royal Honorary Air Commodore of RAF Valley. All these revisions are a testament to the crucial ties between the Royal family and the Armed Forces in the King’s reign.
