The Queen is likely to have been one of the hardest members of the royal family to buy a present for and Meghan Markle found herself with the task of finding the perfect Christmas gift for the late monarch just months after she became engaged to Prince Harry.
The Duchess of Sussex reportedly managed to come up with a hilariously unconventional gift for her husband's grandmother - a singing toy hamster that her corgis went on to maul to bits.
According to the Daily Star, her Majesty was delighted with the gift and burst out laughing when she opened it as she remarked: “It can keep my dogs company.”
A source said: “Meghan bought a little hamster that sings with a little rope for Her Majesty. It was so funny, especially when the corgis tried to take hold of the toy.”
The royal family give each other presents on Christmas Eve as a nod to their German lineage and it's believed they gift one another with jokey items as they already have everything they could ever want or need, the Mirror reports.
The source claims that they also have a very traditional way of arranging their presents.
The insider explained: “The gifts were on trestle tables in the white drawing room where the names were at each table for each family.”
Many of the royal traditions the Queen incorporated were maintained during the first festive season her family celebrated after her passing in September last year.
King Charles kept up their usual festivities by inviting all of the family to Sandringham.
The Prince and Princess of Wales joined the King and Queen Camilla along with Charles' siblings Princess Anne and Prince Edward.
Last year, the royals spent Christmas in Norfolk for the first time in two years as the years before were disrupted due to the Covid19 pandemic.
The late Queen spent Christmas at Windsor Castle two years in row, the first year with the Duke of Edinburgh alone as she was separated from her wider family during lockdown.
Royal Christmases also feature a traditional morning trip to St Mary Magdalene Church, the greeting of well-wishers, and a family lunch of turkey and all the trimmings.
The King also pre-recorded his historic, first ever Christmas Broadcast as monarch where he reflected on the loss and legacy of his dear mother who reigned Britain for 70 years.
Members of the royal family traditionally sit down to watch the televised address when it airs after lunch, usually at 3pm on December 25.
Windsor Castle is also transformed each year for Christmas with a 20ft tree in St George's Hall decorated with 3,000 lights and hundreds of regal purple ribbons.
A team of four staff are specially allocated from the Royal Collection Trust to dress the Berkshire royal residence's festive trees which takes around two days to complete.

Tourists visiting the State Apartments can see the rooms transformed with shimmering trees, twinkling lights and festive garlands.
A handmade angel, which was sourced from nearby Windsor Great Park, also sits on top of St George's Hall's towering Nordmann fir tree.
The Christmas colour scheme at the castle is decided by Royal Collection Trust curators together with the exhibitions team, and this year the central tree will feature purple velvet and satin ribbons and scores of jewel-shaped ornaments.
