Meghan Markle's Denim Delight and African Adventure: A Royal Romance Retrospective
In a throwback photo from her courtship days, Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, once again demonstrates her knack for casual elegance with her choice of holiday attire. The 42-year-old royal fashionista wore this low-key outfit during a heartwarming romantic trip in Africa. This distinct snapshot was revealed in Meghan and Prince Harry's Netflix docuseries that walks viewers through their enchanting love story. The picture was taken during Harry's charming attempt to sweep Meghan off her feet with an intimate three-week African getaway in Botswana during their dating era.
Meghan's simple, laid-back look consisted of denim shorts, a white vest, and a khaki waistcoat. Accessories to her ensemble, including sunglasses and multiple bracelets—one of which matched her partner's, served as chic supplements. Quite an understated fashion statement for a royal but that in itself exhibits her unique style.
During a heart-to-heart engagement interview, Prince Harry shared how important it was for them to enjoy some quality time away from the royal hubbub. He said, 'We camped out with each other under the stars…Then we were really by ourselves, which was crucial to me to make sure that we had a chance to get to know each other.'
Africa holds a deep, sentimental bond for Harry. The continent has been his solace and source of strength after the unfortunate demise of his mother, the late Princess Diana. He beautifully expressed, 'Fifteen years I've been coming here, it's a sense of escapism, a real sense of purpose... I came here in 1997 or 1998 straight after my mum died, so it was a nice place to get away from it all. I feel deeply connected to this place and to Africa.'
Keeping in line with their mutual affinity for Africa, Botswana even contributed to Meghan's engagement ring that featured a natural diamond sourced from the country. Speaking about the ring during their engagement interview, Harry mentioned, 'The ring is obviously yellow gold because that's [Meghan's] favourite and the main stone itself I sourced from Botswana and the little diamonds either side are from my mother's jewellery collection.'
This year, in a moving speech to the United Nations, Harry again acknowledged the profound connection he shares with Africa, stating, 'Since I first visited Africa at 13 years old, I've always found hope on the continent. It's where I've felt closest to my mother and sought solace after she died, and where I knew I had found a soulmate in my wife.'
