Meghan Markle's striking comments before marrying Prince Harry that 'filled Palace with dread'

Before tying the knot in 2018, Meghan Markle accompanied her then-fiance on several royal engagements, during one of which she made a comment that left the Firm reeling.

Meghan Markle made a comment before getting married to Prince Harry that filled the Palace "with dread", it has been claimed.

Prince Harry did not waste time putting a ring on Meghan Markle's finger: they had been dating for a little over a year when the besotted Duke popped the question.

Following the huge announcement, Meghan began embarking on royal engagements with her husband-to-be.

It was during one of the most important royal engagements in the calendar that the future Duchess of Sussex allegedly made the bombshell remark.

Harry and Meghan joined the Prince and Princess of Wales to mark the Royal Foundation's first forum event.

Bombshell: Meghan made the comment during the Royal Foundation Forum in 2018

The foundation was set up by Prince William, Princess Kate and Harry with Meghan joining them and speaking at the event in February 2018.

During the event, they spoke about the charity foundation and its plans for the future, with Meghan talking up her future plans.

Keen to make a good impression, the former actress said she planned to "hit the ground running" when it came to working with royal charities.

Although well-meaning, the comment spectacularly backfired, royal author Tina Brown writes in her book The Palace Papers.

Heady romance: Harry popped the question just over a year after dating Meghan

Meghan's comment filled the Palace "an institution of cautious consensus, with dread", Ms Brown claims.

Elaborating on her role within the Firm, the former editor of Vanity Fair told the Telegraph: "I think Meghan felt she could get in there and change it all. Frankly, she could have done a great deal to change things had she stuck around, but the thing that’s most baffling is such impatience. She could have spent a year away and come back with a great game plan."

It would turn out that Meghan and Harry had different plans. A little under two years after that event, the couple announced they were stepping back from royal duties to start a new life together in the US.

Ms Brown noted that Meghan gave royal duty 20 months, while Prince Harry's late mother Princess Diana "gave it 16 years".

Crossroads: The Sussexes' Spotify has collapsed and divorce rumors are spreading

Fast forward to the present and Team Sussex appears to be at a crossroads.

Sussexes' £15 million deal with Spotify has ended abruptly before their "Archetypes" podcast could see a second season, which has sparked speculation that a career change could be in the offing.

Meanwhile, rumours have been circulating over the couple's potential split, although sources close to Harry and Meghan have consistently denied these claims.

The Sussexes' next move remains a mystery. Harry is currently preparing to travel to Africa alone to make a documentary for Netflix.

It's been reported that Harry wants to "find himself" on the trip - without his wife and the mother of his children.

The Duke is set to follow in the footsteps of his mother, Diana, whose iconic walk through an active minefield in Angola helped usher in a global ban on the deadly weapons and is still very much discussed today.

However, Harry's plans have apparently been shelved amid the ongoing writer's strike in the US.
