An Unexpected Royal Lesson: Meghan Markle's Whirlwind Introduction to Queen Elizabeth

When Meghan Markle first locked eyes with Prince Harry, she confessed, courtesy of her American upbringing, that she was less informed about the royals than most. Her understanding of Harry extended only as far as wanting assurance of his kindness, ''Well, is he nice?'', before agreeing to their mutual friend's attempt at matchmaking. In an interview with the BBC News, Markle hilariously admitted to her naiveness of not realizing the gravity of meeting Queen Elizabeth, who she thought was just another grandmother visiting her grandson.

Revealed in the Netflix's documentary, 'Harry & Meghan', Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry, reflected on the meeting, which was impromptu, 'My grandmother was the first senior member of the family that Meghan met... it was a bit of a shock to the system for her.'

With an air of disbelief still heavy in her voice, Meghan described the rush of learning she was to meet the Queen, "We were in the car, and we were going to Royal Lodge for lunch. And he's like, 'Oh my grandmother's here, she's gonna be there after church.'"

Adding a pinch more spice to her royal introduction was her last-minute crash course on curtsying before the Queen, executed right before meeting her. This courtesy 101 was conducted under the supervision of an unexpected tutor, Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York. Meghan's bewilderment on unexpectedly being asked to curtsy is described as, 'I just thought it was a joke.'

However, following the whirlwind and The deep curtsy lesson, all seemed to have sailed smoothly from then on. Meghan reportedly mentioned that the Queen had been 'always wonderful' to her. Recalling shared breakfasts and warming gestures with the Queen, Meghan admitted she greatly enjoyed the Queen's company.

As the British monarch passed away in September, Meghan shared beautiful memories and expressed heartfelt gratitude for the time she had got to spend with the Queen, 'Certainly, in terms of female leadership, she is the most shining example of what that looks like. I feel deep gratitude to have been able to spend time with her and get to know her...'
