Royal Family LIVE: Sussexes ‘squandered golden opportunity’ blasts Trevor Phillips
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have been accused of “squandering a golden opportunity” to showcase Britain’s credentials when it comes to tackling racism.
Journalist and former London Assembly chairman Sir Trevor Phillips said the Sussexes instead constructed a “ridiculous story” about how badly treated they had been.
Speaking exactly 75 years after the Windrush brought the first immigrants from the Caribbean to the UK to start a new life, Sir Trevor said British society had changed enormously since then.
However, referring to the couple’s allegations against the British royals, which led to them quitting Britain for California at the start of 2020, he added: “They could have been a beacon of discovery and reconciliation! Not just to Britain, but the whole world.
“Instead, they completely squandered a golden opportunity to show everyone what this country is really like in matters of race – a country where no one disturbs themselves about a marriage across the lines of race and ethnicity,’ he adds, getting crosser and crosser.
“But they constructed this completely ridiculous and unpleasant story about how maltreated they were – which, frankly, no one believes. No one cared about Meghan’s race. They could have made things different for millions of people and they chose not to. That’s unforgivable. In my book, that’s a sin.”
